One
way or another, the death of a pet affects everyone in
the family. From the shopper in the family who is no
longer adding the pet's favorite food to the grocery
list to the child whose pet has died, and the parent who
consoles that child, everyone is moved by the death of a
pet, especially the pet that is considered a member of
the family.
The
loss of a family pet can be hard on adults, but helping
a child understand his or her feelings can be even
tougher.
Her
search for a way to help children mourn and to
acknowledge that pain inspired Sheri Baldwin to write a
children’s book. “Goodbye Bernie” not only records her
family’s experience but also discusses mourning,
acceptance, and letting go and honors Bernie’s memory
